Time:12:32 pm.
Sorry I’ve been quiet on LJ lately. I'm plotting. Planning world domination. Stuff like that. Mostly, my office job is a busy one so posting time is minimal.

I’m honing my keen painting skills and working on a new portrait. It’s early in the process but photos will appear soon.

I’m spending the summer playing with the toddler in the sprinkler and trying to coordinate potty training. She is unimpressed with underpants thus far but likes to use her potty.

I’m watching weird sci-fi/horror movies like Tokyo Zombie and Push.

I’m knitting a little. I’m lifting weights a lot. I can perform one full pull-up. I would like to do ten but it’s a start.

I’m teaching myself Swedish which is not easy. The folks who compile the language CDs are sadistic; they choose the fastest native-speakers they can find. The biggest lesson I've learned: if you pronounce words poorly, at least do it quickly so no one can tell.

I donated blood today and the technician nearly hugged me. I was thanked by various people there about twenty times. I guess summer is a slow time for donations. I’m one donation away from earning my ‘two gallon’ pin. Tjosan!

Subject:"Sometimes, I wish I could get my hands on God..."
Time:10:30 am.
I watched Punisher: War Zone last night, and I'm going to happily file in it my "Guilty Pleasures" box, snuggled up next to Demolition Man and Judge Dredd.

Let me start off by saying that movie is VIOLENT. Grandmothers get their heads blown off, parkour-enthusiasts get blown up by rocket launchers, necks get snapped, throats get slit...I've heard this movie described as "Rambo meets Saw". And if any Marvel character deserves an R-rated movie, it's Punisher. The comics are some of the darkest that Marvel has released, and Frank Castle out-broods even the broodiest of heroes like Daredevil or Batman. In fact, the entire plot was very reminiscent of the original Batman. A man's family is killed, he ends up disfiguring the face of a criminal, who then amasses a small army of thugs to take revenge on the brooding vigilante. Broody broody brooding. Broody.

The introduction of the villain Jigsaw was a welcome change from the blah businessman-villain Howard Saint (John Travolta) in the 2004 movie. His New York accent was a bit over the top, but his makeup was fantastic, and his brother "Loony Bin Jim" (played by Doug "Eugene Tooms" Hutchinson) was an excellent sidekick.

There were certainly some groan-worthy supporting characters. Detective Soap, while pulled directly from the comics, forced a "gee-golly-shucks, Frank!" character that was distractingly sweet and saccharine. Wayne Knight's Microchip brought absolutely nothing to the film.

"Hey Frank, I brought you some handguns."
"Thanks, but as you can see, I already own 5,000 guns."
"Oh, right, you're the Punisher. Well, I guess I'll just hang around and wait to get kidnapped."

I'm also glad they put Frank Castle back in New York City. Seriously, TAMPA? What the hell were they thinking? Tax breaks or not, the Punisher doesn't belong anywhere NEAR palm trees (except in Vietnam flashbacks).

My favorite part of the movie, though, was the colors. "Colors? You mean night-black and blood-red, right?" Nope. They went all out with making New York City look like a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. The whole "let's put Punisher in the real world" thing didn't work with the 2004 movie, so I'm pleased they attempted to add a little visual flair to remind everyone "Hey, this is a comic book movie".

Seriously, LOOK AT THESE COLORS! Almost every scene in the movie has crazy vibrant lighting like this. And it works, too. The only time it was distracting was all the neon in the Catholic church. What they lost with character and plot, they made up for with eye candy.

Naturally, this isn't a movie for everyone. It's holding a 26% on RottenTomatoes.com, and I doubt it'll be gaining a cult status any time soon, but if you enjoyed Steven Segal at his Under Siege career peak and want to relive the glorious, gratuitous violent action movies of the late 1980s, Punisher: War Zone is a must-see.

...I should go back to school, if for the sole reason being to learn how to do more than 'simple' perspective.

I haven't the faintest clue how to use it past geometric shapes (as we'd done with very complex images in college, but they were all GEOMETRIC!), because I bet they were afraid we'd use it towards evil things... like illustrations :O No idea how to even piece together references so it reads 'overwhelming' or 'looming over'

wait... I think I might have this. Hmm.

Time for a quick picture update.. even though I met my June goal for updating my Etsy shop, that doesn't mean I've stopped in July!

I'll post them as small, you can just click on them if you want to see them bigger. :)

I don't feel like lj-cutting. Tough cookies! There's not THAT many pictures.

I actually really like this one .. that coral pendant is a Swarovski pendant. it's soooo pretty and sparkly in person! Hard to capture in a picture..

(I also made these in a different color combo)

I thought about using the Etsy Mini this time in here, but I've 'renewed' a few items, so there's new stuff mixed in with older stuff and it wouldn't show all the new things.

There is some funny graffiti on two yellow posts at either end of the bridge spanning the Merrimack River near Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua. They are both written in Sharpie, in large, quivering letters, as though the writer were so intent on sharing his message with the world, it made him shake with purpose. The first reads OBAMA IS A SOLIAST. The second, OBAMA WILL DETROY THE USA.

I kept meaning to bring a camera with me when I walked by those posts again, so I could forever look upon these mighty works and crack a smile at their sheer ignorant panic, but today, on a walk (still sans camera), I was sad to see that the Internet Has Destroyed Everything.

Now the yellow posts read:

OBAMA IS A SOLIAST EPIC FAIL

and

OBAMA Dumbasses WILL DETROY THE USA

Thanks a lot, Internet. You can't let anything stand on its own -- welling up with its own unintentional hilarity -- without commenting on it, reducing it, and ruining it. Epic fail.

What were some of your favorite books when you were growing up (picture books, young adult, etc)?

Me:
The Serendipity books (I loved those! Dragolyn, Shimmeree, Kiyomi, etc).
Petruchka
Bunnicula!
The Lorax
Peter Rabbit
Ramona Quimby books
Those 'Little Golden Books'.
There's a Monster in my Closet.
Where the Wild Things Are.
And when I got a little older I read almost all of the Christopher Pike books (young adult horror).
Same with the Twilight Series books (not the recent vampire film but books published under the Twilight Series 'banner').

On days like this, when cooped in, I get a little anxious about my future job-security. Granted, there's a hyper-earnestness about American intellectual circles particularly with which they like to fret such crises which (could they actually occur) are not normally predictable. Brits and Franks, I think, typically manage to keep a cool irony about them. But days like this, broad-swept book reviews like the following really don't help my confidence in the prospect of my eventual graduate work being taken seriously. Especially the symptomatic equation of greater publishing output with diminishing readership. I'm sorely lacking that calm idealism from which professional scholars (presumably) derive succor. Then again, I do admittedly have too much time on my hands.

"English has become... 'hard and ironic at the same time,' emphasizing 'theoretical rigor and simultaneously debunk[ing] all claims to objective knowledge'—an inner conflict that has proven costly to its standing in the modern university."

Hollywood Reporter is reporting (from Hollywood) that Ryan Reynolds is in the final stages of negotiations to play Green Lantern.

I was really hoping they'd go with Bradley Cooper. Don't get me wrong, I like Ryan Reynolds, just not as Green Lantern. I think he'll be good in the Deadpool spinoff, and he's expressed interest in playing The Flash one day, but you can't be Green Lantern AND The Flash, and I'm disappointed that it appears he chose GL.

I've had an amazing three week vacation..

Road trip to Copenhagen, Denmark to see Gogol Bordello. (first week)
The car was gone the first day so we went to the police who knew nothing of it. We assumed the car got stolen. We didn't let that dampen the mood and managed to have a fantastic time in Denmark getting drunk at amusement parks and getting rides by strangers to Christiania in the middle of the night.

After we had returned home by train on friday the danish police called and it turned out they had indeed towed the car away so Marcus who was the owner had to go back and pay fines and stuff.

Fucking danish.

Arvika Music Festival (second week)
We got there on tuesday and went home on Sunday. I felt absolutely terrible the first three days or so (probably due to the tonsilectomy i did a bit over a month ago) and had a pretty crappy time. But eventually I ate a whole bunch of fruits and I felt alot better. The rest of the festival was amazing madness (even though i missed pretty much all the bands I wanted to see).

Short 3-day visit to Berlin (third/this week)
I just got back from this trip last night and I had such a great time. I went there visiting my two friends Jessica and Cajsa. Unfortunately Cajsa was working every day but I got to spend a lot of time with Jessica who guided me around the city for cool stuff to take photos of. I borrowed a bike and we went around all over and I took these photos:

And on the last day we got sporadic moments of intense rain (and city photos with rain in should always be in black & white).

And on monday I have to be back at work again.

I got a call about an hour ago from my Aunt who had stopped by the hospital to see my Grandmother and she had passed a few minutes before. I'm completely and utterly heartbroken my grandmother was one of the most amazing people I have ever known and had the kind of strength in life i can vaguely imitate but never really have. The family is starting to come over things are going to be insane. My mind is just kind of a blank slate.
